GPL( General Public License), GPL Theme & GPL Plugin Explained

What is GPL or General Public License?

GPL or General Public License, sometimes also called GNU GPL, is the most commonly used free software license. It was written by Richard Stallman of Free Software Foundation for the GNU Project. This license allows the software to be freely used, modified, and redistributed by anyone.

GPL

WordPress is also released under the GPL license, which means that WordPress is open-source software that can be used, modified, and extended by anyone.
The WordPress project considers GPL license to be its philosophical equivalent of the bill of rights. It provides the core basic values that the project believes in.

  • One can download and run the software
  • You can modify it
  • Everyone can redistribute free copies of the software
  • Anyone can distribute modified versions of the software.

One of the primary aspects of the GPL is that it uses something known as copyleft. Copyleft is a play on the word copyright, but the concept is very similar. Basically, it uses copyright law to protect modified versions of work but requires the same protections to be applied to those versions.
For this reason, any work based on WordPress inherits the GPL license. This has caused some controversy as some companies and individuals tried to sell WordPress Themes and Plugins under non-compliant licenses.
However, there is a strong sentiment among the community to protect the WordPress bill of rights. The WordPress project co-founder Matt Mullenweg is very vocal about it.

Are GPL Themes & GPL Plugins Safe to Use?

Yes, GPL themes and GPL plugins are safe unless modified with some sort of code like adding malicious code to benefit from those themes or plugins.
Now the question is from where you get as it is versions of themes/plugins which are created by developer?
There are so many websites providing GPL themes for less price and also they are claiming that they are providing original versions. Sadly, we can’t find if they are genuine or not unless something bad happens to your site.

Why You Should Buy GPL Themes & Plugins?

When you buy a premium theme or plugin that is licensed under the GPL you aren’t buying that shrink-wrapped box of software like we used to buy. That software had its code compiled, making it hidden from everyday users. We had no insight into the code and couldn’t change it no matter what we wanted it to do.
GPL themes and plugins are different. The code is often delivered without any need for it to be compiled, we can read it, learn from it, and best of all, tweak it.

What we’re paying for is often three things:

  1. Get updates for a specific amount of time-based on Membership offered.
  2. You will get support for your questions for a specific amount of time through chat, email, and other mediums
  3. Your website bugs will be fixed by the technical support team
  4. It will cost you very little than the developer cost
  5. You can use it on many sites

GPL theme of a GPL plugin can be used on personal and client websites. Many websites allow this.
We also allow usage on as many as personal and client websites but reselling is not allowed until you have a reseller plan.
Many GPL themes and plugins (recently) come with an activation code. Those codes are there to help developers know that that site is one of the licensed sites where you can get updates, support, and bug fixes. But even without putting in an activation code, many of those plugins will still work.
So, if you are looking to purchase premium GPL theme or Premium GPl plugin. You are at the right place.
